Confused by 2 versions being incompatible

I have been a long-time user of NeoOffice. I bought a new iMac and was advised to upgrade to NeoOffice 3.3 - thats the latest version on the NeoOffice update page. But to upgrade you have to have/open a PayPal account. As I have absolutely no interest in having another PayPal account, (the first was a hair-tearing disaster), I could not upgrade, (even though the forum states that there is a link on the payment page if you do not want to open a PayPal account. Nudge, nudge: there is NO link).
So I (paid and) downloaded the version 2013.1 from iTunes. It seems they are two radically different versions. So I now have TWO versions of Open Office on my Mac. Now that I have paid my $9,99 can I now upgrade my older version to 3.3 without a PayPal account? Probably not! Why make things simple, when they can be made very complicated?
Oh, and you cant post on the NeoOffice forums unless you have paid your $10,00. So suggestions like these are not possible. Very Catch 22.
This is NOT the way to 1) keep older users nor 2) win new users.

On the plus side I gave three stars because I had, up to now, been very happy with NeoOffice and am wiling to pay $10,00/year - but not if the force me to open a PayPal account.
