NeoOffice App Reviews

Disappointed

NeoOffice needs to offer better customer service, they offer no phone number and no email address for support. I had to pay for NeoOffice and it’s not operating properly. I need help and there is no one at NeoOffice to help me. Very disappointed.

Looks Good So Far

I purchased NeoOffice and downloaded it onto a 17” 2009 Mac Book Pro running on OS X El Capitan 10.11.16. So far my usage hasn’t been complex, but in any case NeoOffice is working fine for me, and had no installation issues. For my part, I needed an App that would operate seamlessly, and let me go about my business, as has happened.

The best Suite...

Perfect. Works very well… Open every docs I need ;-)

Confused by 2 versions being incompatible

I have been a long-time user of NeoOffice. I bought a new iMac and was advised to upgrade to NeoOffice 3.3 - thats the latest version on the NeoOffice update page. But to upgrade you have to have/open a PayPal account. As I have absolutely no interest in having another PayPal account, (the first was a hair-tearing disaster), I could not upgrade, (even though the forum states that there is a link on the payment page if you do not want to open a PayPal account. Nudge, nudge: there is NO link). So I (paid and) downloaded the version 2013.1 from iTunes. It seems they are two radically different versions. So I now have TWO versions of Open Office on my Mac. Now that I have paid my $9,99 can I now upgrade my older version to 3.3 without a PayPal account? Probably not! Why make things simple, when they can be made very complicated? Oh, and you cant post on the NeoOffice forums unless you have paid your $10,00. So suggestions like these are not possible. Very Catch 22. This is NOT the way to 1) keep older users nor 2) win new users. On the plus side I gave three stars because I had, up to now, been very happy with NeoOffice and am wiling to pay $10,00/year - but not if the force me to open a PayPal account.

Vorsicht mit dieser Version im AppStore. Warum? Siehe Rezension

- Features that require Java or Python removed Apple requires that applications in the Mac App Store not use Java. Also, neither Java nor Python support the folder and file security restrictions that Apples App Sandbox imposes. Because of these Apple security restrictions, NeoOffice users will notice the following changes in NeoOffice 2013.3: Tables in existing Base databases that use the HSQLDB format cannot be opened. Reports in all existing Base databases cannot be opened. Third party extensions that use Java or Python cannot be installed. Extensions that use OpenOffice Basic or native compiled code will continue to work. Several menu items in NeoOffices File :: Wizards menu have been removed. - Uses Apples App Sandbox Applications that use Apples App Sandbox are not allowed to open any of the users folders or files without explicit permission from the user. So, when NeoOffice 2013.3 tries to open one of the users files, NeoOffice 2013.3 will display a native open dialog set to the files folder. NeoOffice 2013.3 will only be able to open the file if the user presses the dialogs OK button. - Update check feature removed Apples Mac App Store has its own update check so NeoOffices internal update check has been removed from NeoOffice 2013.3. - Media Browser removed Applications that use Apples App Sandbox are not allowed to access other applications user preference files. This restriction prevents the Media Browser code from accessing the iTunes and other applications user preferences. Without such access, most audio and picture files are no longer accessible so the Media Browser has been removed from NeoOffice 2013.3. - Will not overwrite other versions of NeoOffice NeoOffice 2013.3 can be installed on the same machine and will not interfere with other versions of NeoOffice already installed on your machine. Wenn Sie bereits eine andere Version von NeoOffice in dem Programme Ordner installiert, Apples App Store Programm installiert NeoOffice 2013.3 in einem neuen Programme / NeoOffice Ordner. Also, NeoOffice 2013.3 uses the following user preference files and folders to keep NeoOffice 2013.3 preferences separate from preferences for other versions of NeoOffice: User preferences folder (replace "" with your Home folder): ~/Library/Containers/org.neooffice.NeoOfficeSecureEdition/Data/Library/Preferences/NeoOfficeSecureEdition Native preferences domain name: org.neooffice.NeoOfficeSecureEdition - No language pack installers

Low Cost Suite

I’ve been using NeoOffice for about 3 years since I moved from a PC to Mac. I’m extremely happy with NeoOffice. I use mostly the word processor and the spreadsheet. I wrote all my MSc papers using this and export to PDF often. It’s a top notch alternative to what the bigger companies offer.

Unstable even with small local files

This app crashes a lot for me. I am not even doing anything complicated. Just a simple spreadsheet with 10 columns and 20 rows. All text, no formulas, basically a CSV file kind of complexity. Thought this was going to help me with working with Office documents. But it is a bit of a let down. I don’t think it is worth the $30.00 it asked for. I get frustrated with it and now I am on another quest to look for an alternative.

Long term happiness

I have used Neo Office for some ten years and found it very effective. There is a learning curve because of the extensive variety of controls. This is an essential app in my office. If you need something more powerful than Pages (or the other parts of this office suite) then try this. You will respect this app. I have never had it crash on me.

Calc(Excel)

Best Open Office Implementatin on the Mac

LibreOffice, Open Office they all stand out on OS X like a sore thumb. This version feels (and is) much more integrated. I always end up going back to NeoOffice. You rock!

I am simply trying to format a big text of mine (Pages) for the possibility to create a Kindle ebook, which needs a Office file. 1) Tried with LibreOffice. Crashes, parts of text disappear and so on 2) Bought NeoOffice from AppleStore, opened my .odt with it. 3) First result: the .odt file opens totaly blank, empty, white. The text is there, because I see it opening the file with Bean, but in NeoOffice and LibreOffice I do not see one single "a". 4) And now Neo Office opens in CHINESE or something like that, Preferences and all. Not being poor me particularly proficient in chinese, how do I go back to my beloved italian or at least english? Any Help? Would really be very grateful…

Very Good App.

Ive watched NeoOffice mature over the years. It is now a very solid app package and even does things that Microsoft hasnt added to Office:Mac. The interface is very spartin, but is quite usable and the spreadsheet functions read xls files better than Numbers. The trackrecord of these developers is strong and solid. They have kept the app working regardless of changes to the OS and Im glad to see them bring this to the app store. I have supported this app at the highest level for a couple of years now and intend to continue to support them as best as I can. This is an excellent app for everything from office basices to fairly complex documents, spreadsheets, and presentations.

Great App, just a few minor suggestions

This is great, and Ive been using it since 08 (Rhyme not intended) and it has been a great app! Just a few suggestions: try to implement the native scrollbars and try to make the toolbars look a little more native. Im not trying to be picky or anything, but the inconsistency irks me just a little. But still, great app, and if you are about to buy the entire iWork suite, I would suggest this instead, as, in total, the iWork suite is $45, and this is just $10, and this includes many more tools than iWork, and it takes up less space in the dock.

Its the right app I am looking for!

Wanna change my resume of doc file. First install another app which ruined my file. Tried other apps also doesnt work. Finally, this one keeps my file in the format I wantted. Its cool.

Cannot

You cannot cut-paste columns (spreadsheet) without killing the app. Versions didnt work to recover the document. What is going on?

NeoOffice is Great. Highly Recommend

We have used NeoOffice now for four years in our office and have been very pleased. It replaced Office for the Mac and our entire office has been very happy with it. It does most everything MS Office Mac does, but much better, it is more reliable, and it can easily read and write word and excel files perfectly when needed. We have tried OpenOffice and LibreOffice, but they are inferior compared to NeoOffice and are less stable and have more bugs. It was written solely for Mac and has outstanding support. If there is ever a problem or bug (very rare), the developer fixes it right away- try getting someone at MS to do that for you. We put it to heavy use every day, writing very long 100+ page reports with heavy use of embedded spreadsheets, etc., plus do financial spreadsheets that are complicated. It does it all and it does it extremely well. If I sound like a fanboy I am. I was very skeptical 4 years ago in considering making the jump, but it was absolutely the right move. I know others will be pleased. If youre an OpenOffice or LibreOffice fan give it a try. You can always go back if youre unhappy because they are interoperable. There is nothing lost and everything to gain.

Great to see this in the App Store for Mac

Ive been using NeoOffice since its early days and its great to see Planamesa has stayed with NeoOffice all these years (especially with all the changes OS X and Apples APIs have been through). Its a great to have the option of downloading this from the App Store for Mac (convenience and security), not to mention its excellent to see OpenDocument support for the Mac in addition to Apples simpleton support of OpenDocument in TextEdit. The $10 that goes toward regular maintenance of NeoOffice is well worth it!

Abysmal product - waste of money

I purchased this product in lieu of OpenOffice for one thing - to print labels. It does not print labels well. It does not even print them poorly. Trying to print labels corrupted (evidently) the preferences. It is impossible to locate the preferences to trash them and start a new set of preferences. The above could be user error and of course I am venting. But this is not user related. BASICALLY IF YOU BUY NEO HERE IN THE APPS STORE, YOU ARE HOSED. Because you did not purchase it directly from them, you cannot download the software so you can try trashing your old version - but WORSE THAT THAT - you cannot log onto the NeoOffice forum to even ask a question because they do not recognize your App store purchase. BUT they have Download on the Mac App Store all over their site. They basically do not do any support. Now 10 USD is not a lot of money, my time is more important. But if you are looking for a good product from a good company or set of programmers - stay away from these guys.

NeoOffice is the best.

After switching over to an iMac after using PCs with Windows for many years, I find that Writer in NeoOffice is easier to use than MS Word for Windows, it converts all my MS Word legal and technical templates and documents to ODT format perfectly, including special section line and paragraph numbering, and I can perfectly convert documents to MS Word format when necessary. Writer also works well with MathType equations, which I have used in my documents for many years. The only thing that I can find that it does not do is open Visio VSD drawing files, but I use Omnigraffle for that anyway.

Adios Excel

I’ve been a loyal Excel user since the very first version came out in for the Mac in 1985. However, I’ve found the current version of Excel for the Mac (2011) seems to be a little buggy, especially when working with spreadsheets that are on remote servers, a task I do often. The buggy issues manifest themselves in the spinning wheel of wait every time you do a cut/paste or some other operation. With no help on the MS Excel forums, I looked for an alternative and NeoOffice seemed like a suitable program that was designed for Macs. Plus, at $10 the price was right. I’ve been using NeoOffice’s spreadsheet app for over a month and I am very pleased. The only advantage Excel has over NeoOffice is that Excel looks prettier. But NeoOffice works better and is much faster. When I need to print pretty spreadsheets I use Numbers. But when I have heavy spreadsheet work to do, NeoOffice is what I now use.
